Not Kate McCarthy

Why Kate McCarthy and not Gloria Rogers (my real name) on my novels?

The East End of London, before the second world war and into the fifties, was quite a deprived area. Ordinary people worked hard for their living, and that included my parents. My marital surname is Rogers, and my first name is Gloria by birth. аAnd so why do I not write as Gloria Rogers?

Not far from where my parents lived were the dock areas, renown for the influx of sailors from many countries.

My maternal grandmother, Clara, who also lived in the East End, met and married an Irish seaman who continued to go to sea during their marriage. They had two children, my mother and a son.

Tuberculosis was almost indigenous within the seafaring communities, and my grandfather succumbed and subsequently died from the disease.

My mother,аnamed by her father, chose for her, a typically Irish name, Kathleen Mary, and аher maiden name was McCarthy.

It is in her memory that I have usedаher name for my writing, using not Kathleen but Kate as she was more usually known to her friends and family.
